Lies and fictions.

updated March 1999

In 1998, The Holocaust History Project produced a pamphlet entitled Who is David Irving? Upon reading the pamphlet, Mr. Irving pronounced it to be "foul-mouthed," "petty-minded smears," and claimed that it was "lies" and "fictions."

He offered no rebuttal to the pamphlet except a reprint of it, with nine links added to other pages on his site. None of those pages pretends to address the issues raised.

The author of the pamphlet, Jamie McCarthy, is a Holocaust History Project volunteer. Mr. McCarthy emailed Mr. Irving in July 1998, asking two questions. First, why had he invented the notion that The Holocaust History Project was a "front" for the ADL? (Mr. Irving's habit of seeing the ADL behind every tree is documented elsewhere.)

Attempting to ensure the accuracy of the pamphlet, Mr. McCarthy's second question was more important:

Your title on your reproduction of the pamphlet is "More Lies," and you refer to the "fictions" I have written therein. But you don't actually point out anything I wrote that was false.

The question: could you please point out a few of these lies and fictions, so that I may reply and/or correct them?

Mr. Irving responded the next day, saying "Objections noted and I will respond either here or on Web page." But Mr. Irving did not respond. Nothing was sent in email, and nothing appeared on his website.

Six months went by, during which time Mr. Irving made hundreds of changes and additions elsewhere on his website.

When finally reminded that he had agreed to respond, the reaction we saw from Mr. Irving - who claims to be a serious historian - was unexpected. He placed a copy of Mr. McCarthy's reminder email on a webpage and accompanied it by a graphic which we reproduce here without comment:

Mr. Irving claims to be "very, very short of time," and thus unable to answer the above two questions. This, then, is the only answer he can give to what you are about to read.

Appendix: Correspondence

Mr. Irving's comments on the pamphlet, June 1998.

From Diary of a Nobody:

Several coloured students are there, mostly training to become teachers. They are bright and friendly; one tall, doleful man who identifies himself as a Jew takes over the floor microphone and tries to berate me using a handbill issued by an ADL-front organisation. He calls me "racist, anti-Semitic," and all the other tired old clichés. I correct him on these and other points, but it seems clear that nobody believes him anyway.

From More Lies:

The New McCarthyism

ON APRIL 17, 1998, Jamie McCarthy posted the following display on his Website. It repeats the usual foul-mouthed and petty-minded smears against David Irving. Although McCarthy has been aware of the existence of this Website since February 1998 (see correspondence) he has been careful not to extend the usual courtesy of offering his readers links to this site to enable them to check his fictions against the facts.

Mr. McCarthy's email, July 2, 1998.

Mr. Irving,

I have just found your "McCarthyism" directory in the Cyber Cesspit; it was up for two weeks before I noticed it, I'm afraid. I'm flattered that I have a whole folder to myself. Not so flattering was the comparison to Tail-Gunner Joe. No relation, I'm pleased to say.

I have a number of questions for you about these pages, but I'll limit myself to two in this email, so as not to overwhelm you, and I'll get straight to the point:

1) In your "Diary of a Nobody," you describe the Holocaust History Project as "an ADL-front organisation."

My question: would you describe making things up as a habit of yours, or was this just a one-time thing?

2) Your title on your reproduction of the pamphlet is "More Lies," and you refer to the "fictions" I have written therein. But you don't actually point out anything I wrote that was false.

The question: could you please point out a few of these lies and fictions, so that I may reply and/or correct them?

Thank you.

Objections noted and I will respond either here or on Web page

Mr. McCarthy's email, July 3, 1998.

Thank you. Please note that I have incorporated all your comments that I could find on the pamphlet webpage itself. I will continue to do so as time permits (or will make a separate page if I run out of space).

Mr. McCarthy's email, January 6, 1999.

Mr. Irving,

To refresh your memory: you had attacked the Holocaust History Project's pamplet, entitled "Who is David Irving?" as being or containing "lies" and "fictions." You had also stated that the pamphlet was issued by "an ADL-front organisation." While many of the statements that you made about my modest work were false or misleading, these were the two which best lent themselves to direct questioning.

I therefore, last July 2nd, asked you two questions:

1) In your "Diary of a Nobody," you describe the Holocaust History Project as "an ADL-front organisation."

My question: would you describe making things up as a habit of yours, or was this just a one-time thing?

2) Your title on your reproduction of the pamphlet is "More Lies," and you refer to the "fictions" I have written therein. But you don't actually point out anything I wrote that was false.

The question: could you please point out a few of these lies and fictions, so that I may reply and/or correct them?

It has now been over six months since you stated you would respond to these two simple questions. I have seen no response.

I assume you're not put off by the facetious tone of question number one; if you find my sense of humor grating, please accept my apologies and consider it rephrased as "why did you describe the Holocaust History Project as 'an ADL-front organisation'?"

In any event, it seems I was quite right to limit myself to two, so as not to overburden you. Other questions come to mind as well. I'd also like to ask, for example -- all these points are raised in the pamphlet and you've been free to address them at any time:

But at this point, it looks like I shouldn't expect even an answer to the first two. Should I keep waiting?

Mr. Irving's email, January 7, 1999.

Hello Jamie,

by the fact that I am still working at 6:10 a.m., you will see I am very, very short of time to handle e-mails. But to do the fair thing, I'll post your letter prominently, though without answers, on my online newsletter.

Of course our site will never be as beautiful as Nizkor's but then they and you don't battle against the Filters, do you.

Regards

David Irving

(Mr. McCarthy has "battled against the Filters" since before Mr. Irving knew they existed; he is a founding member of The Censorware Project. Mr. McCarthy is not associated with the Nizkor Project.)

His letter to you shows just how ignorant he is. Not only that but, for an Irishman, and this comes from an Irishman, a complete and utter fool! It is obvious he cannot read nor can he think, because if he were to read your books, especially Goebbels but including Hitler's War, he would, then at least, have the facts of where you stand plainly in front of him. Plus his lies about the backing by the terrorist group ADL, make me sick. He should be forced to read the Talmud, of which English editions are in existence, of course he would have to be tought to read, wouldn't he?
